South Dakota annual 
license plate fees.

License plate fees in South Dakota are billed according to the unloaded weight and the year of the vehicle. Below is some examples of license plate fees. If you would like an estimate of what it would cost to license your vehicles in SD each year feel free to contact our office with the unloaded weight and year of your vehicle and we can give you an estimate. Your license plates must be purchased from the Brule County Treasurer's office.  You will be required to provide either a Social Security number or a South Dakota driver's license number in order to purchase license plates in South Dakota. If you would like assistance with titling your vehicles in South Dakota contact our office. Our fee is $50 + $3 sales tax per vehicle in addition to the fees your owe the treasure's office.  If you have never paid at least 3% sales tax on your vehicle you will owe 3% excise/sales tax on it at the time of titling. If you are purchasing a new vehicle you will owe 3% excise/sales tax on the trade difference.

4001-6000 lbs. 0-9 years old cost approximately $92.50
10 years plus cost approximately $70. 

Motorhomes
10,001 lbs.+ 0-9 years old cost approximately $170
10 years + cost approximately $125
20,001 lbs.+ 0-9 years old cost approximately $295
10 years + cost approximately $212
30,001 lbs.+ 0-9 years old cost approximately $420
10 years +cost approximately $300
40,001lbs. + 0-9 years old cost approximately $545
10 years + cost approximately $387

License plates in SD expire on the following schedule.
The schedule goes by the first letter of your last name.

January A & B
February C D & E
March F G & J
May H I & O
June K & L 
July M & N
August P Q & R
September S
November T U V  W X Y & Z
December Commercial plates 

First time license plate purchases will be pro-rated until you reach your expiration month then you will pay for a full year of license plate fees at that time. (If you start within 2 months of your renewal date you can renew them right away.)  

You can hire our office to pick up your renewal stickers or order them on-line at least 10 days before they expire.
