Where do I register my vehicles?

If you have a mailbox with South Dakota Mail Forwarding, LLC, you will register your vehicles with the Brule County Treasurer’s office in the Brule County Courthouse in Chamberlain South Dakota. 605-234-4436.

When will my license plates need to be renewed each year?

Vehicles are renewed each year according to the first letter in your last name.  For example names that start with A & B renew in January each year.

Does South Dakota have a sales tax on vehicles?

Yes they do, but technically they call it an Excise tax rather than sales tax. The rate is 3%. If you already own your vehicles and paid more than 3% in another state, the state of SD usually grants reciprocity and in most cases you will NOT have to pay it again. You may need to provide a bill of sale or purchase agreement to prove you paid the sales tax when you purchased your vehicles. If you purchase a vehicle out of state you may have to show the dealer your SD driver's license and tell them you will pay the sales tax when you register it in South Dakota.

Will the Brule County treasurer’s office accept my personal check?

Yes, they will. They are not set up to take credit cards at this moment.
(Although they may in future) You can call their office (or ours) with the year and dry weight of your vehicles and they can give you the amount it would cost you to register your vehicles in South Dakota.
